As a follower of Christ, I have found it necessary to start – and end – my day with my head and heart in the right place. Through the years, certain devotional books have counseled me and guided me as I’ve sought to understand important truths found in the Bible.
I’d like to introduce to you my favorites. I’ll include a link for each book in case you’d like to purchase one. If you do so, I may earn a small percentage – at no extra cost to you. It’s just a way for me to pay for the costs to keep my blog up and running.
A warning, though. Each of these devotionals has a way of challenging your way of thinking and include calls to action that will make you step out of your comfort zone. But, wouldn’t you agree that when we do step out of those comfort zones we find joy and freedom and – more importantly – a deeper, more meaningful relationship with God?
My Utmost For His Highest
My Utmost for His Highest has been a proven, best-selling devotional for many years. Over the past century, Oswald Chambers’s writings have inspired countless people to drink deeply from the biblical truths that he so passionately championed. His words are simultaneously penetrating and invigorating, and they trigger something in your soul leaving you forever changed. The biblical thoughts and themes that Chambers delivers in this classic-language edition will resonate with you as you seek to grow your faith.
Streams in the Desert
Few books ever attain such widespread recognition and perennial appeal as Streams in the Desert. Now over seventy years since its first publication, this marvelous devotional by Mrs. Charles E. Cowman has established itself firmly in the ranks of the Christian classics. Written from Mrs. Cowman’s rich experiences with life, from its dry wastelands to its well-watered gardens, Streams in the Desert is a legacy of faith and wisdom that is time-tested faithfully to the One who alone can slake their spiritual thirst.
In the midst of today’s fast-paced world, the wisdom of Streams in the Desert remains refreshing, relevant and trustworthy. Turn to it daily, tune out the clamor of living, and let these prayerful writings inspire fresh hope, confidence, and a deep awareness of God’s presence in your life.
Keep a Quiet Heart
When you long for a quiet refuge away from the noisy, frenetic circumstances of day-to-day commitments–where do you turn? If you’re Elisabeth Elliot, acclaimed speaker and author of many best-selling books, you look to one place alone: to the embracing arms of our omnipotent and infinitely loving Heavenly Father. This book is a unique collection culled from the lead articles featured in Mrs. Elliot’s newsletter over the past several years. “Mostly they are about learning to know God,” the author says. “Nothing else comes close to being as important as that. It’s what we are here for.” Join Elisabeth as she points the way to a deeper, more fulfilling–and restful–walk with God.
New Morning Mercies: A Daily Gospel Devotional
Mornings can be tough. Sometimes, a hearty breakfast and a strong cup of coffee just aren’t enough. Offering more than a rush of caffeine, best-selling author Paul David Tripp wants to energize you with the most potent encouragement imaginable: the gospel.
Forget “behavior modification” or feel-good aphorisms. Tripp knows that what we really need is an encounter with the living God. Then we’ll be prepared to trust in God’s goodness, rely on his grace, and live for his glory each and every day.
These devotional books weren’t written to make the reader feel warm and fuzzy. They were written to point us to Christ and remind us of our need of Him. They offer a higher perspective and challenge us see with new eyes the God who reached down to save us.
For His sake, and for His glory,
