How to Overcome Fear: A Christian Guide to Faith Over Fear

Starting now, let’s begin to dismantle the stronghold that fear has on your life.  There’s no better time to begin.  This is the second part in my series on fear.  Find the first one here.

I like what Max Lucado wrote in his book, “Fearless”.  He said, “Feed your fears and your faith will starve.  Feed your faith, and your fears will.”

So how do we actually do that?

How Do We Feed Our Fears?

It all starts with the things we tell ourselves.

The “What If” Cycle

“How do I overcome fear?” often begins with recognizing this pattern:

“What if…”

  • What if everything goes wrong?
  • What if nothing works out?
  • What if I can’t handle this?

Almost immediately, we assume the worst.

We stop believing the truth of Romans 8:28—that God is working all things together for good for those who love Him.

We Forget Who God Is

We tell ourselves that our problems are too big…
too complicated…
too overwhelming.

And in doing so, we forget what God has already said:

“I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27)

Never in history has God failed to accomplish His purposes.

We Listen to the Wrong Voices

Fear grows when we surround ourselves with doubt.

Instead of standing in faith, we:

  • Listen to discouragement
  • Agree with fear-filled thinking
  • Avoid what God is calling us to face

Even worse, the enemy whispers lies:

  • “God isn’t enough”
  • “You won’t make it through”

But those voices are not truth.

“How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer’s ear!  It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds, and drives away his fear.” John Newton

We Try to Control the Future

Fear often comes from the illusion of control.

We think:

  • If I worry enough, I can prevent something bad
  • If I fear it, I can prepare for it

But that’s not true.

Fear doesn’t control the future—it only steals peace from the present.

How to Overcome Fear by Feeding Your Faith

Francis Frangipane wrote:

“Let your fears go… take your stand in faith… God has been good and He will continue to manifest His goodness.”

This is the turning point.

We must stop feeding fear—and start feeding faith.

1. Replace Fear With God’s Word

Jesus said:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you… Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”(John 14:27)

God’s Word directly confronts fear.

Other powerful reminders:

  • Joshua 1:9 – Be strong and courageous
  • Matthew 6:34 – Do not worry about tomorrow
  • 1 Peter 5:6–7 – Cast your anxiety on Him
  • Isaiah 41:10 – Do not fear, for I am with you

The more truth you take in, the less room fear has to grow.

2. Train Your Mind to Think Differently

The Apostle Paul gives us a clear strategy:

“Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely… think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8–9)

What you think about shapes what you feel.

When you:

  • Focus on truth
  • Meditate on God’s promises
  • Reject negative spirals

…your fear begins to lose its grip.

3. Starve Fear by Strengthening Faith

When we consistently feed our faith:

  • Fear begins to weaken
  • Anxiety loses its control
  • Our perspective changes

What once felt overwhelming starts to shrink in light of who God is.

4. Fill Your Life With God-Centered Input

One practical way to overcome fear?

Worship.

Listening to Christian music—especially songs rooted in Scripture—can:

  • Calm your mind
  • Refocus your thoughts
  • Remind you of truth

John Newton once said:

“How sweet the name of Jesus sounds… it soothes his sorrows… and drives away his fear.”

That’s the power of fixing your mind on Christ.

Powerful Scriptures on Overcoming Fear

Here are key Bible verses to hold onto:

  • Psalm 56:3–4 – When I am afraid, I trust in You
  • 2 Timothy 1:7 – God gives power, love, and a sound mind
  • Psalm 118:6 – The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid
  • Psalm 27:1 – The Lord is my light and salvation
  • Romans 8:38–39 – Nothing can separate us from God’s love
  • Psalm 34:4 – He delivers us from all our fears

Final Thought: God Is Greater Than Your Fear

God doesn’t shrink—our perspective does.

When you fix your eyes on Him:

  • Fear loses its authority
  • Peace begins to grow
  • Faith becomes stronger

He is all-knowing.
He is all-powerful.
And He is exactly what you need.

Let Him take control.
Let Him calm your fears.
Let Him set you free.

Fear is something every Christian wrestles with at times. But what does the Bible really teach about fear—and why does God allow it in our lives?

Let’s answer some of the most common questions.

FAQ: Fear, Faith, and Trusting God

Why does God allow fear in our lives?

God does not waste fear—He uses it.

Fear reveals what we truly trust. When life feels uncertain, it exposes whether we are relying on ourselves or on God. It also reminds us that we are not in control, which draws us into deeper dependence on Him.

Rather than being meaningless, fear can be a tool God uses to bring us closer to Him and strengthen our faith.

Is fear a sin for Christians?

Not always.

Feeling afraid is part of being human. The Bible often says “do not fear,” but it also assumes that we will experience fear.

Fear becomes sinful when it leads us to:

  • Distrust God
  • Doubt His promises
  • Refuse to obey Him

There is also a healthy, biblical fear—the fear of the Lord—which leads to wisdom, reverence, and humility before God.

What should I do when I feel afraid?

The Bible doesn’t just tell us not to fear—it shows us what to do instead.

When fear comes:

  1. Bring it to God in prayer – Be honest about what you’re feeling
  2. Remind yourself of truth – Replace “what if” thoughts with God’s promises
  3. Choose faith over fear – Even if you still feel afraid
  4. Focus on God’s presence – He is with you in every situation

Fear may still be present, but it no longer has to control you.

How does fear affect my faith?

Fear and faith grow in opposite directions.

When we feed fear—through negative thinking, worry, and doubt—our faith weakens. But when we feed our faith—through Scripture, prayer, and truth—fear begins to lose its power.

This is why focusing your mind on God’s Word is so important. What you dwell on will shape what you believe.

Can fear actually strengthen my relationship with God?

Yes, it can.

Fear often drives us to seek God more urgently than comfort ever does. In difficult or uncertain moments, we pray more, depend more, and listen more closely.

In that way, fear can become the very thing that deepens your relationship with God—if you respond to it by turning toward Him instead of away from Him.

What does the Bible say about overcoming fear?

The Bible consistently points us to trust God in the middle of fear—not just try to eliminate it.

Scripture reminds us:

  • God is with us
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.” (Isaiah 41:10)
“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
  • God is in control
“The Lord has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all.” (Psalm 103:19)
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him.” (Romans 8:28)
  • God is good
“The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him.” (Nahum 1:7)
“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” (Psalm 107:1)
  • God is faithful
“The Lord is faithful to all His promises and loving toward all He has made.” (Psalm 145:13)
“If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot disown Himself.” (2 Timothy 2:13)

Overcoming fear doesn’t mean never feeling afraid—it means choosing to trust God even when you are.

Final Encouragement

I hope you let Him drive your fears away and allow Him to take control. He loves you—more than you can imagine. His love is complete, steady, and unchanging.

Give your Heavenly Father the opportunity to do what He does best: set you free.
