6 Books That Have Made Me a Better Parent

Christian Parenting Books

We’ve all heard people say, “Parenting is the only job that doesn’t come with a training manual”.  Maybe that was true before the 21st century, but now there are so many resources available that we are left without excuse.  Parenting can be overwhelming, even exhausting, but thankfully we now have thousands of articles on the internet, parenting magazines, seminars and, my favorite – books – at our fingertips that provide biblically-based teaching and wisdom that can give us the tools we need to guide us through the process without fear and anxiety.

In recent years, it has been difficult – heart-breaking, really –  to watch the news and read online how twisted the role of parenting has become, especially when God is not in the picture.  Children are growing up believing lies and are even confused about their own sexuality.  The world has “exchanged the truth of God for a lie” (Romans 1:25) and is being willfully deceived by a “modern”, secular and evil culture.  I find it abominable.

So here I’ve compiled a shortlist of six Christian books that have made me a better parent.  I’ve read them all and, along with my husband, have put many of their biblical-based tips and teachings into practice – and we have been impressed by the results.

Our children are on the cusp of adolescence so we have a ways to go, but we are thankful that we have the right perspective and the information we need to move through this next phase of parenting without apprehension.

  4. Thank you so much for this list. I am interested in getting help, as I am raising teenagers at this point, and I must say, it is getting more difficult to fight our sexualized culture.

  6. Parenting is probably one of the most challenging tasks we will ever face. And generally something we are the least prepared or trained for! This makes it imperative for us as parents to read, join groups with other parents, get into Scripture etc so that we can continue to learn about how to parent, as we lead our children. My children are grown and two now have children. But as in any new stage of life, we must now learn how to parent grown children as they raise their children! We continue to lead our families and we desire that our children know that learning and growing is a life long process and that with every transition and change there are new things to be learned. What a great list of books you have suggested. Great encouragement for parents to read and continue to learn!
